Uganda Virus Research Institute

Seeking a LABORATORY MANAGER to support the National Institutes of Health (USA) ICER Virology laboratory at UVRI in Entebbe. Responsibilities will include supporting and directing the operation of the lab by maintaining supplies, consumables, and equipment; also maintaining logs, record books, and stocks; performing assays such as ELISA, qRT-PCR, and PCR; sample storage, field sampling to collect livestock, insect and rodent samples; supervision of other laboratory members including trainees. This position requires adhering to specific instructions from the supervisor, including biosafety protocols for the handling of potentially infectious materials and following well-defined procedures and practices. Experience handling potentially infectious samples under BSL-2 and BSL-2+ conditions and experience designing, conducting, and processing of samples from field sampling trips is desired. Education and experience: Minimum MSc with at least two years experience in a professional laboratory. Desired start date is April 1st, 2023.

LABORATORY MANAGER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.
The following are among the duties to be performed on a routine basis.
• Design of experiments and studies including in collaboration with outside researchers
• Perform assays, and prepare consumables and other work according to the set procedures.
• Development of standard operating procedures and training others on these procedures
• Keep laboratory supplies ready by inventory stock, placing orders, and verifying receipt.
• Work with campus staff to maintain laboratory and facilities
• Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
• Monitor sample freezers.
• Design, manage, and conduct field trapping studies including trapping of insects and rodents
• Processing of field samples in accordance with protocols
• Adherence to biosafety protocols and ensuring others adhere to these protocols
• Document information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books.
• Attend and participate in group and project meetings.
• Provide regular updates to NIH staff
• Supervision of other laboratory members including trainees

The position is full-time, and initially available for one (1) year, with the ability to renew per availability of funds.
